Nonstop Movies: ‘Men in Black III’

I must admit I had pretty low expectations for “Men in Black III.” I’ve never been a fan of the franchise as the whole alien theme seemed silly to me, and it’s been a decade since the last film, so exactly who was asking for this sequel anyway? Well, the obvious answer would be the greedy folks over at Sony…

Hawaii: In Real Life ~ Brasserie Du Vin

I recently started working with Brasserie Du Vin (@Duvin808) in Chinatown — a restaurant that I have always enjoyed over the years for various occasions. Even when they changed chefs and pastry chefs, their food has remained consistently solid, and their wine list, consistently exquisite. I got to go behind the scenes with chef Marco Elder, who recently tweaked the…

San Francisco: Bay to Breakers 2012

One of the wildest fun runs in the world was muted extensively last year, when longtime sponsor ING pulled out due to community complaints about drunkenness, lewd acts, and runners relieving themselves in people’s yards. Print shop Zazzle stepped up to save the day, and I’m glad to report that Bay to Breakers is back in full force. The weather was…

Views of Bay to Breakers 2012

It’s been two years since I ran the famous Bay to Breakers fun run with my wacky friend, Brad Tada (@tadasauce). If you recall, he dressed up as Gumby, which was a big hit in itself, then stripped out of it to join the rest of the crazies who were running au naturel.Well, on Sunday, May 20, at 7 a.m….

Nonstop Movies: ‘Battleship’

Actor-turned-director Peter Berg had a promising start behind the camera. After a shaky debut with the dark comedy “Very Bad Things,” he went on to direct the very underrated “The Rundown,” the small-town football film “Friday Night Lights” and the Middle East thriller “The Kingdom.” None were great box office successes, but they all displayed potential of a great directorial…

Nonstop Movies: Fab Five summer movies

It’s just mid-May, but the summer movie season is already upon us with the recent, record-breaking opening of “The Avenger.” I was in Japan, so I missed out on contributing to its $200-million opening, but I have since seen the film, and although it was solid, I wasn’t entirely blown away by it. So what summer releases am I hoping…

While I was out of town, my business partner, Russ Sumida (@Parkrat) went to the grand opening of Orogold, a new skincare/cosmetics store in Waikiki, to take photos. When I came home, he said, “You gotta try this place.” Oh, really? Thanks a lot, bud. I know my skin needs, work, but…Turns out, he was impressed with their set up…

Fukuoka faves

When people head to Japan, most times they think of going to Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka — but many don’t realize that there’s a strong Hawaii tie to Fukuoka. Gov. George Ariyoshi, one of many local residents whose family is from there, even signed a sister city agreement between Honolulu and Fukuoka in 1981.I met Ko Isayama and Ray Sekiya…

Hawaii: In Real In Life ~ Hank’s Haute Dogs

Kakaako is one of the hippest neighborhoods on Oahu, but it wasn’t always that way. It was always described as an industrial area, and many of the streets don’t have sidewalks. In recent years, it’s become a destination — especially for young people — with many great places to eat, work and live.Hank’s Haute Dogs (@HanksHauteDogs) was one of the…
