February 2022: The 3 Frolic Hawai‘i Articles You Liked Most

Pageviews don’t lie—here are the stories you read and shared most.

In this warmest of Februaries, you wanted news, nostalgia and outside-the-box suggestions for where to spend your money. At least, that’s my takeaway from pageviews in February. Newsy posts consistently rank among our most-read, so that was no surprise. What was a surprise? That two of this month’s top three articles were produced by Frolic’s newest and youngest team member, intern Lauren Kaneshiro. (Shoutout to potential employers: Lauren will graduate from UH Mānoa in May, is interested in public relations and social media marketing, brings the best desserts to meetings and has evolved into one of Frolic’s top content generators in only the second month of her four-month internship.)

And the spendy suggestions I mentioned earlier? The fourth, fifth and sixth most-read posts in February were Worth the Splurge: Feast Mānoa’s $35 Bento, Dine-in and Takeout Menus for Valentine’s Day 2022, and Worth the Splurge: Da Garlic King Crab Poke Dat Costs $36 a Pound.

The coming of Tiger Sugar drew new crowds to a forgotten corner near Downtown and Chinatown; for us the Taiwanese boba chain was simply a new dessert option next to a longstanding trio of iconic eateries. Frolic’s Maria Burke opened our three-part look at what’s good in the Miyamoto Building with her video visit to Tio’s Tamales. Lauren’s debut video was Part 2: a tasty sampling of the fishcakes and fried chicken that make Nu‘uanu Okazuya a perennial favorite.

You can tell a lot about a person from where they eat. Think about the top 5 places you frequent most: Boom, that’s you on a plate, right? Lauren’s first post as Frolic’s official spring semester intern introduced her to readers—a college student who loves her morning coffee as much as dessert, and whose favorite eateries hold memories of countless visits with her family.

If we’re being honest, we dread posts like this as much as we love them. True, they keep us on top of the food scene (“You want a dim sum rec? Wait, there’s a new place opening next month”), but that scene is constantly surging forward, and with our own research supplementing leads that come in from everywhere, there’s no way to wrap everything into one post. It’s like trying to catch a stream. So we dip our toe in, picking a moment in time and culling a massive list to highlight the new and coming places that stand out to us. Last year we managed to do this only twice (our January 2021 roundup was Frolic’s No. 2 post for the entire year and was still being read in December, so we updated it). We’ll publish more New & Coming posts this year, I promise.
