The End: Blue Tree Cafe Cleanse, Day 5



Juice cleanse day five ended at 11 p.m. at V Lounge. The pizzas arrived, and, for a second, it was like we didn't know what to do. Ries felt guilty at the sight of food; Angie contemplated the pizzas; I wondered if I still knew how to chew.

Ok, so technically, you're supposed to wait until the next day to eat. Five days of deprivation, though, and suddenly we couldn't stomach the last hour until midnight. But by the next morning, I felt amazing and energized. I guess I'll never know whether it was the pizza, relief that the cleanse was over or the cleanse itself that made me feel great.

Ries says he felt light and healthy at the end. But what he lost in weight, he picked up in new addictions: Blue Tree Cafe and juice. He returned to Blue Tree the day after the cleanse for a kale salad (and four shots of espresso). Then he bought a juicer. He's drank the juice Kool-Aid and it tastes like carrots and kiwi (who juices kiwi?!).

Would we do it again? Ries: yes. Angie: maybe. Me: no. But ask me again after a year of cocktails and poutine.

Here's what we ate during the Blue Tree cleanse. We signed up for the five-day cleanse, with the first and last days including some raw, vegan food to ease the transition. This is a beginner cleanse, Blue Tree Cafe said; it felt like Everest for us. A more hardcore program is longer and involves more juices and less smoothies.

Day 1
Breakfast: Java Up Tea and Blue Tree Blend (smoothie with acai, chocolate vegan protein, banana, almond milk)
Lunch: Very Verde (kale, avocado, banana, coconut water smoothie) & Raw Bar
Dinner:  Zucchini "pasta" and carrot-apple-ginger juice
Before bed: Smooth Move Tea (herbal laxative tea)

Day 2
Breakfast: Blue Tree Blend with spirulina
Mid-morning: Kombucha
Lunch: Carrot-apple-lemon-ginger juice
Mid-afternoon: Almond milk
Dinner: Very Verde
Before bed: Smooth Move Tea

Day 3
Breakfast: Celery-cucumber-pineapple-kale-apple-lemon-ginger juice
Mid-morning: Kombucha
Lunch: Blue Tree Blend with spirulina
Mid-afternoon: Almond milk
Dinner: Very Verde
Before bed: Smooth Move Tea

Day 4
Breakfast: Celery-cucumber-pineapple-kale-apple-lemon-ginger juice
Mid-morning: Kombucha
Lunch: Antioxidant smoothie (blackberry, blueberry, strawberry smoothie with maca, hemp and chia)
Mid-afternoon: Almond milk
Dinner: carrot-apple-ginger-beet juice
Before bed: Dandelion tea

Day 5
Breakfast: Blue Tree Blend with spirulina
Mid-morning: Almond milk
Lunch: Zucchini "pasta" and kombucha
Dinner: Vegan taco and carrot-apple-ginger-beet
Before bed: Dandelion tea
