We may not get snow on O‘ahu, but that doesn’t stop us from making the most out of the annual Christmas tree expedition—laughing as we go over the Pali and through Red Hill to Helemano Farms in Wahiawā. “The best part is seeing the kids come out and get all jazzed up and excited. And the dogs,” says second-generation tree farmer Pat O’Brien. “Everybody brings their dogs.” Traditionalists in Hawai‘i usually opt for the Norfolk pine indigenous to the Pacific, but this year O’Brien has a home-grown crop of five types of cypresses, including a frosty blue-green Carolina Sapphire (above) for that natural flocked look.

In 2020, Helemano Farms will be open starting Saturday, Nov. 21 through Wednesday, Dec. 21. Hours are noon to sunset Wednesday through Friday, and 10 a.m. to sunset on weekends. 1750 Whitmore Road, Wahiawā, (808) 622-4287, helemanofarms.com
