Da Cove Small, $7.50

“Da Cove Health Bar on Monsarrat Ave. I love just the simple Da Cove bowl. The honey they use makes it the best, and don’t forget to add bee pollen! (Cash only, though.)”

Shelley Shiroma, associate art director

Hawaiian Deluxe, $12.50

“Da Cove’s Hawaiian açaí bowl, topped with a scoop of pa‘i‘ai, definitely.”

Indie Bowl, $8.99

“Indie Girl’s Indie Bowl at International Market Place. It’s loaded with granola, bananas and raw coconut. The texture is thick and not soupy like other açaí bowls. I order it sans honey—it’s already sweet enough. Ugh, I want one right now.”

Cathy Cruz-George, managing editor of HONOLULU Family

Aloha Bowl, $9–$10

“In Kailua, Makai Bowls—that little blue trailer off Kailua’s Ho‘olai Street—is worth searching out for açaí. It serves two basic bowls for breakfast or lunch, one açaí-based and the other a peanut-butter blend. The portions are generous, the service friendly and you’re supporting a local business. Added bonus: now there’s a picnic table in the back if you want to eat your bowl before the açaí starts to melt. Beyond the fruit, granola and honey, you can customize toppings, adding peanut butter, bee pollen, more fruit, etc., with the price hovering around $9 to $10 for a bowl.”

Da Classic, $8.74–$9.90

“So I am not really a big açaí bowl person, but the one I do like is from Lanikai Juice—original location in Kailua. I like that they put a lot of sliced bananas on it, and also the granola they use is especially good. I asked what kind it was once, and they told me some vanilla type that was from Down to Earth. So I went and bought it. And it is really good granola. But not as good on its own. The sweetness, the vanilla and the type of crunchies in it just go really well with icy, tangy açaí and sliced bananas. It’s the whole combination that makes that particular one so good.”

Alyson Helwagen, publisher

Açai Monkey, $10.10–$12.09

“I discovered açaí bowls and Lanikai Juice at the same time, so for me, they’re inextricably tied. I grew up in Kane‘ohe and, even though Kailua was basically next door, the short bus trip there was still an adventure for me and my friends. My high school best friend helped me order the first time: “Make sure to get granola on the bottom, too. And extra honey.” Since then, I’ve moved to town and so has Lanikai Juice. Other people go to the Whole Foods on Queen for groceries or the hot bar. I go there for Lanikai Juice’s Açaí Monkey bowl, which comes topped with peanut butter, granola, banana and cacao nibs.”

Açaí bowl, $9 (upgrade for $5)

“The entrance to this little gem of a surf shop is hidden behind a rainbow colored van down a side street near The Brewseum and Kaka‘ako Fitness. The only items on the menu are an açaí bowl topped with honey, strawberries, blueberries, bananas, coconut flakes and granola, and Turkish coffee. This sweet bowl is terrific as an afternoon treat.”

Rio Açaí, $6.99

“Leave the honey, take the granola—this simple bowl is perfect for those looking for more açaí than extras. Every time I look at the size of this generous helping of creamy açaí, banana slices and crunchy clusters of granola, I think there is no way I could finish it all. Then I find myself licking the bottom of the bowl.”
