Now that Mango Season Is Finally Here, Try These 8 Mango Treats Before Summer Ends
Mango pies, smoothies, bagels and more: Juicy sweets in every form have cropped up around Honolulu.
Coming home to Hawai‘i for the summer means one of my favorite things: mango season. Due to a serious sweet tooth, I’m always craving new treats and revisiting old favorites. MW Restaurant’s mango shave ice is already a classic, so this summer, I tried other things, from icy bingsu and mango-filled pie to mango sticky rice-inspired sweets (there were several of these!). These are the ones I hope will be here when I come home next summer.

Down to Earth
Mango Sticky Rice Smoothie, 16 oz. smoothie $11.99, bowl $13.99
If you love mango sticky rice, this drink turns the beloved Thai dessert into a refreshing summer sip. The smoothie blends frozen mango with coconut cream and chewy tapioca pearls, making it feel like a lighter, drinkable version of the classic. The mango sticky rice bowl is another option, with chunks of frozen mango on top.

Kansai Yamato
Mango Mochi, $7.99
Simple but satisfying, Kansai’s mango mochi wraps nearly half of a fresh mango in their soft, delicious mochi. When the mango is perfectly ripe, it’s an incredible combination of juicy fresh fruit and chewy rice dough. The dessert relies heavily on the quality of the mango, so it can be a hit or miss depending on the season. Arrive earlier in the day for the best chance of snagging one.

Kaimukī Shokudo
Mango Graham Honey Toast, $18
Kaimukī Shokudo’s seasonal honey toast is topped with mango compote, mango pureé, vanilla ice cream, graham cracker crumble and a drizzle of sake caramel. While it is a decadent dessert, I found myself wanting more mango. It felt like an accent rather than the star of the dish.

Jejubing
Mango Bingsu, $11.95
For something cool and fresh, Jejubing’s mango bingsu is hard to beat. The fluffy, snow-like milk shaved ice is topped with fresh mango chunks, mango sauce and whipped cream and served with a side of condensed milk for customizable sweetness. It’s light, fruity and perfect for sharing.

Fresh Mango Pie, $14
Kathy Masunaga’s fresh mango pie features good-sized chunks of Mākaha Mangoes layered over liliko‘i gelée and cheesecake mousse in a buttery crust, all of it finished with whipped cream. Waiola Shave Ice
Mango Sticky Rice Shave Ice, $9
My personal favorite. Available only at Waiola’s Mokihana Street location near Waikīkī, this creative take on classic shave ice captures mango flavor without using fresh mango. Instead, coconut cream shave ice is topped with mango fruit spread, condensed milk and chewy coconut tapioca sago pearls.

Fin’s Bagels
Mango Sticky Rice Cream Cheese, $7.95
One of the most unexpected seasonal offerings comes from Fin’s, which transforms mango sticky rice into a sweet cream cheese. Made with mangoes from a small North Shore farm, the spread is surprisingly delicious on a toasted bagel. My only complaint? It could use more mango chunks for goodness in every bite. This one is available for a limited time.

Magnolia Ice Cream
Mango Madness Halo Halo, $8 to $11
Magnolia’s mango halo halo may be available year-round, but it’s especially refreshing on a hot summer day. The Filipino classic gets a tropical twist with house-made mango ice cream, shave ice and sweet mix-ins, making it the creamiest treat on this list.
