Kāko‘o Maui: Buy Online From These 6 Farms to Support Maui

If you want to support Maui from afar, check out these farms that sell their locally grown and made products online.

Want to support Maui but can’t finagle a trip there right now? You don’t have to hop on a plane to the Valley Isle, which, with the exception of West Maui, is open to visitors. Shopping Maui businesses online—from wherever you are—helps, too.

The deadly wildfires in Lahaina have had devastating effects on Maui farms, many of which provided ingredients and products to island restaurants that were destroyed or damaged by the fires.

With the holidays coming up, you’ve got plenty of excuses—we mean, reasons—to buy local.

Hashimoto’s Kula Persimmons

Fall is persimmon season, and the fourth-generation-run family farm in Kula should have its fresh maru and fuyu varieties available in October. (The trees on its 3-acre farm in Upcountry Maui were damaged by the high winds that fueled the wildfires last month.) The farm also sells value-added products like jams and butters made from the milder and sweeter fuyu persimmons, persimmon cookies and dried persimmons. Order soon; the Maui farm only has limited quantities that tend to sell out fast.

Maui Ku‘ia Estate Chocolate

Though Maui Ku‘ia’s Lahaina factory and farm didn’t burn in the wildfires, many of its employees lost their homes—it listed their GoFundMe pages on its Instagram—and the farm was heavily damaged by the hurricane winds that fueled the fires. You can still order the award-winning chocolate online, including the best-selling Maui-grown dark chocolate bar and Maui Mokka cappuccino chocolate bar. Sets are available, too. The company will donate 25% of the sale price from online orders to recovery efforts. Expect delays as it’s still trying to send out orders made before the wildfires.

Ali‘i Kula Lavender

There are so many products to browse at the family-run Ali‘i Kula Lavender farm, from its popular 100% Turkish towel to lavender-scented aromatherapy pet shampoo. But we love its culinary offerings, including a jam made from farm-grown lavender and Maui-grown strawberries and Hawaiian chile peppers that’s so good over cream cheese on toasted bagels. The online shop also sells lavender shortbread cookies, lavender-flavored coffee, lavender-chocolate brownies and local honey infused with lavender. The farm says shipping may be delayed, so be patient.

Maui Gold Pineapple

For more than 40 years, Maui Gold has grown some of the sweetest pineapples in Hawai‘i on the cool slopes of Haleakalā. And yes, the farm can ship its super-sweet pineapples to your door. You can order a single pineapple, starting at $49.99, or a monthly subscription, starting at $39.99 a month (including shipping). With every purchase of a Maui Gold pineapple, the company will donate to relief organizations providing aid on Maui. The online shop also has a variety of pineapple products, including Jeff’s Jams & Jellies’ best-selling pineapple jelly, a tropical gomme syrup made from cold-pressed Maui Gold pineapples (great in cocktails) and HI Spice’s pineapple-habanero hot sauce made with Maui-grown ingredients.

Maui Upcountry Jams & Jellies

You can’t go wrong with the jams, jellies, curds and butters from this Kula-based company, all hand-crafted and using tropical, farm-fresh fruits like liliko‘i (passion fruit), starfruit, mango and guava. Its mustards are a must, too, in flavors like Maui onion and garlic, pineapple and mango-ginger. The company also sells barbecue sauces and syrups. One of its most popular items is a black raspberry jam made from handpicked black raspberries that grow on its Kula farm.

MauiWines

For more than 40 years, grapes have been growing on the slopes of Haleakalā at ‘Ulupalakua Ranch. The 23-acre vineyard, located at an elevation of about 1,800 feet, boasts six grate varietals for making the various vints for MauiWines. You can order bottles of this unique wine, much of which is sourced on Maui, online, from the 2020 Syrah to the crisp Maui Blanc pineapple wine made from 100% Maui Gold pineapples. Check its website to see where the company is allowed to ship its wine.
