Wine dinners at The Plaza Club
You’ve probably been to The Plaza Club downtown for meetings and big events, but you rarely, if ever, get to partake in their special wine dinner programs … until now. Once a month, The Plaza Club is offering a special four-course dinner creatively paired with a famous or unique winemaker. These events are available to members as well as non-members, which is a nice way to see what you might get with membership (as well as network).
Many wine dinners feature foods that are already on the menu; here, chef Randy Whiteford uses it as a chance to challenge his creativity in making dishes that don’t just match the wine, but create an experience in your mouth. This was evident in his crazily amazing salad, which you’ll see in this gallery, that was good on its own but extra elevated with the wine. Here’s how their first one went, featuring the popular Orin Swift:
Wine dinners at the Plaza Club
The Plaza Club’s next wine dinner is on March 4 featuring Husic Vineyards, a newish boutique winery in Napa Valley. It’s $125 per person, which includes wine, dinner, passed appetizers and craft cocktails (which is even better than the dinner we had!). You can call 808-521-8905 to make your reservation.
Also as a bonus, chef Whiteford sent me his menu for the next dinner, which usually doesn’t come out so early. I just don’t know what the wine pairings will be.
- Grilled mackerel
- Truffled leek and potato chowder
- Lamb breast with charred root vegetables, chickpea socca and black garlic puree
- Grilled dry-aged Kulana ribeye with duck-fat fried potatoes, shallots, and smoked white soy butter
- Bitter chocolate budino and pane al cioccolato
Whereas the last dinner’s theme was “spring,” this one looks like a tour of southern Europe.
Mahalo to Cait Farr, David Miyamoto and Randy Whiteford for inviting me to the Plaza Club’s first wine dinner in this series!
