Where They Are Now: 90-Plus Lahaina Restaurants, Bars, Snack Shops & Food Trucks

 

 

It takes a lot to run a restaurant. What it takes to rebuild one destroyed by a fire that swept away a community and more than 100 lives is almost beyond imagination. But many of Lahaina’s eateries have reopened or are in the process of coming back.

 

We found as many restaurants, bars, snack shops and food trucks as we could—91 in the list below—and did our best to track down their status. Three years after the fires, the results paint a picture of a slow, painful and uncertain comeback. More than three dozen eateries and bars have reopened, though many have left Lahaina. When we checked two years ago, just over two dozen were open, so there is slow momentum. But several of those have since closed, including Kamala’s Kitchen, Merienda Maui and TaquerEATa, whose last Instagram post had the food truck up for sale because its owners were leaving the island.

 

Our hope in tracking down nearly 100 businesses is to help people find the survivors, especially those for whom survival is fragile. Eateries marked by an asterisk were destroyed in the Aug. 8, 2023, blaze. For those that are open, trying to reopen or have other locations on Maui, we’ve hyperlinked their Instagrams or websites.

 

Special thanks to Frolic reader Robin Ritchie, who emailed us back in March with a brief update on Front Street businesses around her. It was Ritchie who told us that while Prison Street Pizza is gone, you can find some of its pies at Serpico’s in Upcountry Maui, which shares the same owner; this we confirmed with the restaurant.

Bipolar Eats food truck

Closed.

 

*Breakwall Shave Ice Co.

Sister company Down the Hatch’s website says the bar and Breakwall Shave Ice will reopen in Ka‘anapali in February 2027.

 

Burger King

Open on Keawe Street in Lahaina and other locations.

 

*Cabanas Cocktail & Wine Bar

The business was still in the works and never opened.

 

*Café Café Maui

Closed.

 

*Captain Jack’s Island Grill

Reopened at the Sands of Kahana resort.

 

*Cheeseburger in Paradise

Closed. Reports at one point said it was to reopen at Kihei Marketplace in 2025.

 

*Choice Health Bar Lahaina

Closed, but locations in Ka‘anapali, Pā‘ia and now Wailea are open.

 

*Cool Cat Café

Reopened at Kukui Mall in Kihei and expanded with Cool Cat Express in Ka‘anapali.

Open at 70 Lono Ave. in Kahului.

First destroyed restaurant to reopen at Emerald Plaza in Lahaina. Expanded with Via! by Sale Pepe at Whaler’s Village in Ka‘anapali, which has since closed.
