2. DOUBLE WEEKEND FEATURE

Honolulu Museum of Art’s Doris Duke Theatre is hosting the Honolulu Jewish Film Festival during the first two weekends in March (2-3 and 9-10). Catch 10 movies and documentaries, most of which include a Q&A following the screening.

6. GAME CHANGERS

Hulu has created a special “Female Icons” channel for International Women’s Day. Watch RBG, He Named Me Malala and Serena among other great documentaries about real-life superheroes.

7. NEW KIDS ON THE RUNWAY

Start booking cheap flights on Southwest Airlines this month. Honolulu to Maui routes will take flight by the end of March while intersland flights will begin this summer. Flights to L.A. will follow soon after as well as more direct interisland flights. Plus there’s a new SWA terminal at Daniel K. Inouye International Airport.

8. SPRING FORWARD

Clocks are being adjusted for Daylight Savings on March 10 so be careful when calling your friends, family and coworkers on the Mainland. Otherwise, keep calm and carry on, Hawai‘i.

Netflix’s new filmed-in-Hawai‘i-but-not-set-in-Hawai‘i movie, Triple Frontier, starring Ben Affleck, Charlie Hunnam, Oscar Issac, Garrett Hedlund and Pedro Pascal premieres on March 13.

 

10. #inclusiverevolution

Donate and support Hawai‘i’s athletes Rainie Thompson, Tyler Morimoto and Rob Steiner at the Special Olympics World Games held in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates from March 14 to 21.

11. PLIE L.A.

Ballet Hawai‘i brings L.A. Dance Project to the Blaisdell on March 16 for a special one-night-only performance. The founder of L.A. Dance Project, Benjamin Millepied, is a world-class choreographer whose work is featured in Darren Aronofsky’s award-winning film Black Swan.

 

12. HASH IT OUT

Fill up on corned beef hash this St. Patrick’s Day (March 17) before heading to Murphy’s Bar and Grill for a pint of Guinness. Messy post-pint block parties: optional.

 

13. ACE OF SPADES

David Spade will take a break from filming his new movie, The Wrong Missy, for a standup special at the Blaisdell Concert Hall on March 17.

14. READY … SET … GUMBO!

Demo Dinner Series launches on March 18. The new foodie event is hosted by Ocean Friendly Restaurants Hawai‘i. The theme of the first event is Mardi Gras so attendees will learn how to make the Cajun classic, seafood gumbo. Next month Ocean-Friendly Restaurants will partner with Surfrider Foundation for a sushi-making class.

15. Spring Clean Your Kondo

March 20 marks the first day of spring. If you can name a better time to start Marie Kondo-ing your life, we are all ears.

 

16. To market, to market

Kaka‘ako Farmers Market launches its Sunset Market on March 20. The market will be held at 1050 Ala Moana Blvd. (across Ward Avenue from Shepard Fairey’s new Pow! Wow! Hawai‘i mural) every Wednesday evening, from 3-7 pm.

17. MOONSTRUCK

The final Supermoon (when the moon is at its closest to the Earth, making it appear larger and brighter than normal) of the year happens on March 20-21. Night surfing, anyone? Diving, maybe?

In fact, you can support World Water Day by visiting a little Insta-worthy exhibit in Waikīkī called Epic Aloha. The team behind Breakout Waikīkī partnered with Sustainable Coastlines Hawai‘i to create an “interactive photo experience“ that’s chock-a-block with brightly colored rooms to snap as many social media pics that your heart desires (how many is too many Boomerangs?). One of the 12 rooms is solely dedicated to Sustainable Coastlines’ efforts to clean up Hawai‘i’s shores and $1 of every ticket sold goes to the nonprofit.

Tell your fur baby that they’re a very, VERY good boy or girl on National Puppy Day (March 23).

 

21. PINK ELEPHANTS ON PARADE

 

Ugly cry during Tim Burton’s live-action remake of Dumbo, which opens in theaters on March 29.

 

22. A WHALE OF A TIME

 

Whale season is coming to an end later this month. We suggest a hike up Makapu‘u Lookout for one last chance to see the beautiful beasts.

23. MAMA SAID SO

International Market Place hosts the Mom Made Market, a biannual pop-up market that celebrates local moms and businesswomen, for the first time on March 30 and 31. The weekend event is hosted in the valet parking area on level three, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day.
