Two New North Shore Food Trucks: Sandy's Sandwiches and The Garden Oven

Salad

Do you have plans to watch the big waves this winter on the North Shore? After you figure out which beach you’re going to and where you’re going to park, don’t forget to factor in another important decision: what you’re going to eat.

These two new food trucks, which both serve fresh food made with ingredients from Island farms, belong on your radar.

Sandy’s Sandwiches

Located on the Kahuku-side of Shark’s Cove, this tiny sea green and blue trailer serves fresh sandwiches and salads using organic and local products whenever possible. Owner Ryan Dack, a former surf videographer, lives in Pupukea and makes a trip around the island every two or three days to pick up farm-fresh ingredients from his purveyors, which include MA‘O Organic Farms.

The chicken pesto and turkey-and-brie sandwiches are the most popular on-the-menu items, but Peck is constantly updating his offerings with new personal favorites, such as the prosciutto and avocado sandwich. On the more substantial side, try the Ka‘iwi Special ($14), which has sliced turkey, artichoke hearts, avocado, tomato and greens on molasses bread, or the Chop Salad ($14), a “mix of everything on the menu,” including prosciutto, chicken, blue cheese, goat cheese and avocado on a bed of kale and swiss chard.

Sandwiches and salads from $8 to $14. Open 10am to 5pm daily. Closed Tuesdays. Located on the north side of Shark’s Cove on the Makai side. 499-4722, sandyssandwiches.blogspot.com

Margherita from The Garden Oven

The Garden Oven

Usually parked near Rocky Point, this mobile pizza truck produces made-to-order pies in its wood-burning brick-oven trailer. Owner Raul Bernal, a North Shore resident by way of Chile, has cooked in several O‘ahu restaurants, most recently at Turtle Bay Resort’s Ola’s, and built the pizza oven himself. He applies the same DIY aesthetic to his food, making as much as possible from scratch, including the pizza sauce and the dough, which he prepares a day in advance, letting it rise over a 24-hour period to develop a more complex flavor.

Toppings come from local farmers and producers when possible, including herbs from Pupukea Gardens, eggplants and other veggies from Waihuena Farms, and sausage from the Never On Sunday Greek food truck in Waialua. Try your favorite single toppings, such as mushrooms or pepperoni ($14), or one of Bernal’s daily specials, such as the simple, satisfying Margherita, made with fresh mozzarella and sliced tomatoes ($20).

Pizzas from $14 to $24. Open from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. most days. Location varies: Check the Garden Oven Facebook or call 371-7091 for more information.
