Two-Minute Takeout in Kāne‘ohe: Kikuya Restaurant
The teri beef and shrimp tempura teishoku with all the fixings is just one of many favorites at this Kāne‘ohe mainstay.
It’s a delicious landscape out there! We’re bringing back our Two-Minute Takeout video series with all-new episodes about dishes from new-to-us places and longtime faves.
Kikuya Restaurant has served up fresh Japanese fare from its spot between a warehouse and an auto repair shop on Kahuhipa Street since the 1980s. For 40 years, locals have come to depend on the hole-in-the-wall’s friendly service, large dining room and comforting offerings like whole fried akule, ‘ahi belly and teri chicken for family gatherings and weekday dinners.
My go-to comes in the form of the Kikuya Teishoku ($22.95). The deluxe meal set includes rice, shrimp and vegetable tempura, Japanese-style potato salad, green salad, namasu, sashimi and miso soup. Every dish is prepared with consistent technique and lots of care. You can’t go wrong with crispy, juicy tempura and the fresh sashimi, but the queen on the plate is the deeply flavored, thinly sliced beef glazed in sweet teriyaki sauce that ties the meal together.
Open Tuesday through Sunday, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., 46-148 Kahuhipa St. C, Kāne‘ohe, (808) 235-2613
