September Food News Update: 11 Restaurant Openings and 2 That Closed on O‘ahu

A monthly update of new arrivals, including a restaurant in a 5,000 dollar a night hotel and 10 other places.

Opened:

Mugen, a high-end Japanese and French restaurant in Espacio hotel—with the same owners as Kona Abalone and where there are only nine suites, starting at $5,000 a night—is now open to the public. 2452 Kalākaua Ave., (808) 377-2246 for reservations.

 

Tanya’s Pies and Grill soft-opened in the former Sunnyside space in Wahiawā in mid-September. 1008 California Ave., Wahiawā

Quiora, an open-air Italian restaurant with all-day dining in the Ritz Carlton Waikīkī, opened in late August. 383 Kalaimoku St., ritzcarlton.com

 

Peking Duck Express, with steam table Chinese food (think Panda Express) as well as made-to-order items, roast duck and roast pork, opened in the 808 Center in late August. 808 Sheridan St.

 

Dior Café replaced the Island Vintage Shave Ice kiosk at Ala Moana Center in late July with … shave ice (but more expensive), and also desserts and lattes with “Dior” on the foam. 1450 Ala Moana Blvd.

 

Hughley Express, a downtown outpost of Hughley’s Southern Cuisine in ‘Aiea, serving items like collard greens and smothered chicken, opened in late July. 900 Fort St. Mall

 

‘Ono Seafood, the popular hole-in-the-wall poke place on Kapahulu, opened a new location in Hawai‘i Kai in late July. 501 Kealahou St.

“Snowthies”—part Taiwanese snow ice and part smoothie—are now served from the colorful food truck Milky Way Hawai‘i Ice, usually parked near Mother Waldron park. Opened in late July. facebook.com/MilkyWayHawaiiIce

 

Blue Tree Café, a coffee and smoothie spot with a healthy bent, opened a new location in Kaka‘ako, across from Salt in July. 600 Ala Moana Blvd.

 

Morning Glass Coffee + Café opened a small outpost at the KEY Project community center in Kāne‘ohe in July. 47-200 Waihe‘e Road, Kāne‘ohe

 

Closed:

ChiChop, a Taiwanese fried chicken chain, closed this month at the Ala Moana Center food court.

 

Grylt, a healthier plate lunch, closed this month at Kahala Mall.
