A reasonably priced dinner buffet in Waikiki? Yes, such a creature exists — at Pikake Terrace, on the ground level of the casual-chic Sheraton Princess Kaiulani Hotel. You get the al fresco ambience surrounded by greenery, and something new: This buffet is Italian.

The La Costa Italiano dinner buffet is available daily from 5:30 to 9 p.m. for $34.95 per adult and $17.50 for children ages 6 to 12, with a generous 25 percent kamaaina discount that applies to the breakfast buffet as well as the dinner one. That comes out to about $26 for a dinner buffet in the heart of Waikiki.

The carving station features prime rib of beef with au jus and horseradish, fresh Manila clams in a white wine sauce and mushroom risotto. The prime rib easily steals the show — it’s tender and juicy and just yum.

Hot entrees include seafood cioppino — a savory medley of squid, mussels, shrimp and crab in a tomato broth — plus mushroom chicken, fresh-caught local fish, steamed New Zealand mussels, pasta al forno and daily pasta with sauce on the side. Bonus: If you’re there on a Saturday night, crab legs are included in the buffet.
Pasta al forno features a baked pasta of the day, but if you’re choosing a starch, go for the herb-roasted potatoes. The distinctive rosemary and garlic flavors make these carb bombs even more delicious.

The array at the bread station features Hawaiian sweet rolls with maple butter, French baguettes with salted butter, artisan rolls with basil garlic butter and focaccia with EVOO and balsamic vinegar. The freshly made-in-house focaccia is so delightful it’s easy to go overboard, but save room for the other buffet stations.

Every night at the dessert table, you’ll find tiramisu, panna cotta, chocolate pot de crème, chocolate mousse and more. Four other rotating specials like fresh banana tarts, bread pudding and chocolate cake will take their turn in the lineup.

Have family or friends in town who want dinner and a show? On Sundays, Wednesdays and Fridays, Sheraton Princess Kaiulani’s post-dinner ‘Te Moana Nui: Tales of the Pacific’ show takes the stage. The hour-long performance transports you back in time with stories from cultures across Polynesia. Different dinner-and-show packages are available so you can indulge at the buffet, then head upstairs to watch the live performance.
