Our Kaka‘ako will be the place to hit this weekend, with lots of events for everyone. Here’s a rundown of what’s happening:

Friday, Nov. 21

Eat the Street: Bacon

All of Kakaako will be smelling of bacon for the return of this wildly popular foodie-favorite theme. To prevent back-to-back feasting overload, this month’s event is happening one week earlier.

Bacon lovers will enjoy live music by Ashley Lilinoe; a happy hour from 4-6 p.m.; voting for #Grinderzchoice Best Bacon Dish, and two other contests: Best Bacon Costume and Best Bacon Poem. The winner of the Best Bacon Costume contest will win $20 worth of food, and the winner of the Best Bacon Poem contest will win $100 worth of food. Here’s the lineup and menus.

 

Saturday, Nov. 22

Kakaako Arts Makahiki Fest

The PA‘I Foundation brings makahiki to Our Kaka‘ako in celebration of the season of Lono — a time set aside for tribute, harvest, sport and play. The public is invited to participate in a number of traditional makahiki field games, and also encouraged to bring canned goods for the Hawaii Food Bank that can also be donated in lieu of scrip for the makahiki games.

Event highlights include:
• Konane (Hawaiian checkers) Tournament
• Slippery Fish Relay Race
• Makahiki field games, including Ulu, Maika, Moa, Pahe‘e and others
• Cultural demonstrations, including pa‘i‘ai (kalo pounding) station
• Entertainment & hula performances
• Artist booths, featuring Lakota skateboard artist Walt Pourier
• Storytelling tent
• Food trucks

 

Paper House: an appreciation of printed matter

Paper House is a paper party celebrating the fine art of papery things. If you’re a fan of photography, photographers Franco Salmoiraghi, Gaye Chan, Atis Puampai, Alex Delapena and John Alexander Hook III will be selling photobooks they’ve created just for this event. Ara Feducia will be hosting a ‘zine workshop for anyone interested in designing their very own ‘zine. And if you’re a ‘zine collector, bring your collection to show, sell, trade or buy with others.

Honolulu Printmakers will be there to celebrate with this paper-loving community, as will Brue Bar to keep everyone caffeinated.

 

Street Grindz presents Threadz

Street Grindz presents Threadz, Honolulu’s first ever “Streetwear” event featuring Tag Your Swag Studio with local artists, food and drinks and a live DJ. The event will host Hawaii’s exclusive selection of t-shirts, hats, tanks and shoes.

A Night on the Towns

The first annual Fall Ball themed, “A Night on the Towns,” will provide a magical evening where guests will enjoy the sights, sounds and tastes of Milan, Tokyo, San Francisco, Mexico City, Honolulu and other exciting cities that are homes to Impact HUBs around the world. The night will include complimentary parking, complimentary beer and wine, a silent auction, Honolulu’s favorite chefs and restaurants, dancing to Quadraphonix and more.

Proceeds from this fundraiser will help put ProtoHUB, providing infrastructure program and community development to create a world-class Impact HUB Honolulu in support of Hawaii’s local entrepreneurs and innovators.

 

Hawaii Sketch Comedy Festival 2015: Kick Off Fundraiser

Help raise money for the 2015 Hawaii Sketch Comedy Festival, which provides performance opportunities to writers, performers and artists to showcase their original work, and education workshops and panels to guide them to building their businesses.

The fundraiser will feature special guest radio personality, musician and comedian, Fernando Pacheco and musical guest, Sheen. For for anyone who cherishes the days of Rap Reiplinger and Booga Booga and relishes good comedy, music and fun, this event is for you.

This is the second Baker Faire pop-up bakeshop, featuring Honolulu pastry chefs and bakers. Enjoy coffee by The Curb and sweet and savory pastries by Jennifer Hee, Michelle Karr-Ueoka (MW Restaurant), Jackie Lau (Roy’s), Chani Maunakea-Forth (Town), Alison Yokouchi (The Pig and the Lady), Kimberly Oi (Pili Group) and Lee Anne Wong (Koko Head Cafe). Baker Faire will also introduce its Collab Pie, one pie made up of eight different slices from each of its participants.
