Yes, we’re working from home again. No, that doesn’t mean another 28 days of instant ramen and burnt Eggo waffles. At least, it doesn’t have to.

Just reopened a few days ago on Tuesday, Aug. 18, elegant Japanese-French fusion restaurant Mugen Waikīkī (located in Espacio the Jewel of Waikīkī, Aqua-Aston Hospitality’s new and incomparably luxurious boutique hotel) has taken initiative to help flatten the curve by postponing dine-in services for the time being. But all hope is not lost: The restaurant is still offering takeout service for a curated menu of dishes, plus a brand-new bento option that rotates weekly.

Mugen Waikiki weekly bento

Let it be known that these are not your grandma’s bentos (though we love those too, Gran). This week, Mugen’s bento includes jidori chicken confit with summer truffle jus, Kona kampachi with watermelon consommé, an heirloom tomato salad and more. And, at $25, it’s an affordable way to get a taste of what the fine dining restaurant has to offer.

For a more proper example of what Mugen’s about, take a look at the takeaway menu, which features a curated lineup of seasonal dishes that highlight executive chef Jason Yamaguchi’s elegance and craftsmanship: Gem Salad with shio-miso vinaigrette, Parisienne gnocchi, bouillabaisse with local shellfish in a saffron broth … and, if you want to get real extra, kiawe-smoked Sasanian Osetra caviar, available at market price. Staying true to Mugen’s forte for crafting thoughtful rotating tasting menus, the takeaway menu is divided into starters, mains, shared plates, sides and dessert, giving you the option to create your own multicourse tasting experience.

Also known for its wine and spirits collection—which include rare and restaurant-exclusive pours—it would not be a true Mugen-at-home experience without without a little something to sip on. For the first time, the restaurant is offering its full wine and drink menu for carry out as well, which include its signature $18 cocktails.
