How To Be A Better Hawai‘i Local: When Visiting Botanical Gardens
Replace invasive plants with native ones
Is that strawberry guava tree in your yard slowly killing other plants with its roots? Replace it with a native plant. ‘Ōhi‘a lehua (Metrosideros polymorpha) comes in many colors, and can be a shrub or tree; it’s inspired a rich history of songs and has been fighting for its life against Rapid ‘Ōhi‘a Death, a fungal disease that has killed more than a million of these trees on Hawai‘i Island alone.
Report outdoor hazards
If you see something illegal, call the hotline at (808) 643-DLNR (3567) or use the DLNR Tip app. Report fallen trees or stream washouts at hawaiitrails.hawaii.gov.
Use the app
Since July, the state began sharing information about trails and other natural resources on the free Outer Spatial app. Hikers can check conditions before they go, find out where it’s dog- or wheelchair-friendly, hunters can check into hunting areas and more.
