Next time you visit Maui, consider ditching the gas-guzzling rental car for a Bio-Beetle vehicle. Shaun Stenshol, owner of Maui Recycling, and Pamela Miedtke-Wolf debuted the company in Kahului in 2003, claiming it as the world’s first all-biodiesel rental car company. All of its 17 vehicles, which include VW Golfs, Jettas, Beetles and a Jeep Liberty SUV, run on refined vegetable oil made by Pacific Biodiesel. “We felt that it would be a great idea to rent cars to visitors on Maui, showing them that renewable fuels are here today,” Stenshol says. Rentals start at $49.99 per day; at press time, biodiesel was $3.49 per gallon. 55B Amala St., 808-873-6121, www.bio-beetle.com.
