First Friday in Chinatown

Chinatown
As always, Chinatown will be the place to be on First Friday with gallery receptions, boutique openings, live entertainment and other exciting art and music-centric events.
The Art Walk happens between 5 and 9 pm each month, and the late-night party kicks in afterward at every bar and hot night spot in the Chinatown district.
At Ong King Art Center, come for Ong King Academy, with art, live music, a drum line and improv. A $5 admission gets you all-you-can-drink kava, with other beverages available for purchase separately. The event is free before 8 p.m.; $10 after. If you come dressed as a high schooler, you’ll get $2 off the cover charge.

Talk story with Caledonia Curry (SWOON) and Bryan Welch (Guilds) from Brooklyn, NY. Curry and education designer Bryan Welch will introduce their work in Haiti and how Guilds aims to build curricula across cultures. Free parking at 555 South St. or free street parking on Cooke St. after 6 p.m.

‘The Addams Family’

Based on the characters from the popular 1964-66 television show, Gomez, Morticia, Uncle Fester, Grandma, Wednesday, Pugsley and Lurch are back as the eccentric, wealthy Addams clan who delight in the macabre while being unaware that people find them bizarre or frightening. Daughter Wednesday Addams, the ultimate princess of darkness, has grown up and fallen in love with a sweet, smart young man from a respectable family. A man her parents have never met. Hidden secrets get revealed for both families on the fateful night when they meet for dinner at the Addams’ and their two different worlds collide. The result is hilarious.

Revive The Live Music Festival

The Revive The Live Music Festival celebrates and perpetuate the revival of Live Island Reggae Music in Hawaii. The one-night festival will feature five of Hawaii’s most talented and sought after bands, including Fiji, Kolohe Kai, Maoli, Ekolu and Ooklah The Moc. To close the night, Katchafire from New Zealand will perform.

Persian Screen Film Festival reception

The Honolulu Museum of Art’s Persian Screen Film Festival Presented by Roshan Cultural Heritage Institute kicks off on Sept. 6, with an opening reception. Enjoy delicious Persian-inspired dishes with a glass of Shiraz wine, beer or soda in the museum’s Luce Pavilion Courtyard. There will also be a screening of “A Cube of Sugar | Ye Habe Ghand” at 7:30 p.m.
The festival celebrates and explores Persian society, culture, and history through film. These award-winning features highlight the breadth of contemporary Iranian cinema and includes two recent films starring Leila Hatami, who achieved international recognition for her role in 2012 Oscar winner A Separation.

On The Spot Improv Presents The Gamers Ball Part 3 on Saturday September 6 at 8 p.m. at the ARTS at Marks Garage.
Join them for a video game themed-party that celebrates everything video games. Come in cosplay or come as you are. There will be a game demos from Play Station, Wii, and X Box set up around the gallery, There be a Nintendo DS section, $1 hot dogs and live entertainment. This party is a fundraiser for the upcoming Improvaganza Hawaii Festival of Improv happening September 25-28 at The ARTS at Marks Garage.
