‘Five-0’ preview: ‘Ho‘ohuli Na‘au”
If there was ever any doubt that “Hawaii Five-0” is largely a platform to inject celebrities and scantily-clad women into a police procedural, tonight’s episode will put them to rest. Our crack crimefighting team must investigate the death of a famous photographer who is killed while in town for a bikini photoshoot.
Said photographer, Renny Sinclair, is played by Rick Springfield, a Grammy Award winning musician who just happens to be in the headlines this morning for a DUI arrest.
Sinclair’s womanizing likely prompted many catfights during his photoshoots, and his death leaves more than a few suspects. So Danny (Scott Caan) gets the difficult task of interviewing every single swimsuit model.
He, as the CBS release notes, “thinks this might be Five-0’s best case ever.”
Who’s Who
Among the pretty faces — and other pretty parts — featured tonight will be those of Serinda Swan (last seen in “Tron: Legacy”), Andrea Bowen (who plays Julie on “Desperate Housewives”), and Angela Lindvall (from “Kiss Kiss Bang Bang” and Victoria’s Secret).
Renown Asian American actor Sab Shimono plays Uncle Keako, and Brian Yang makes his first, but not last, appearance as crime lab technician Charlie Fong. Yang actually wrote about landing the role on his blog.
“This trip has just been completely random and crazy each and everyday (tsunami warning included) and if it’s a dream, I don’t want to wake up,” he blogged. “I don’t know how to explain this, but it’s like this was just all supposed to happen exactly how it did. I’m beyond myself.”
Local actor Andy Trask, who plays Derek Marcum, provides the episode’s “LOST” connection. He played a hotel manager in Australia, and a monk in Scotland.
We’ll also see pro surfer Kala Alexander, who’s landed roles in several Hawaii productions, including “Forgetting Sarah Marshall,” “Blue Crush,” and the short-lived “North Shore.”
Show Notes
- There are two more episodes of “Five-0” left in this first season. Next week brings “Ua Hiki Mai Kapalena Pau,” translated to, “The End is Near,” in which Danny risks becoming a victim in a bioterrorism investigation. The season finale, “Oia‘i‘o” (“Trust”), airs May 16, and brings the team a little too close to nemesis Wo Fat.
- With no official word that there will be a second season of “Five-0,” CBS is making the most out of the fact that the season finale will end with a cliffhanger in which we’ll lose one of the show’s stars. The folks at TV Guide say it could be Grace Park, or returning guest stars Jean Smart or Kelly Hu. Though I would be crushed if Daniel Dae Kim left the show or Hawaii, he’s still my top guess.
- Last week’s episode of “Five-0” saw the show’s largest audience since November, drawing 11.44 million viewers, an increase of 20 percent over the previous week. The ratings were undoubtedly boosted by guest star Sean Combs, and the fact that many other networks aired reruns during the holiday week.
