‘Five-0’ Preview: ‘E Mālama’

“LOST” alumni Daniel Dae Kim surely had flashbacks filming tonight’s new episode of “Hawaii Five-0,” as the action takes him back into the lush jungles of O‘ahu to protect the sole witness in a high-profile murder case.
Unfortunately for the team, that witness — Julie Adelman, played by Mariana Klaveno (last seen in “True Blood”) — isn’t the only one in danger.
Det. Danny Williams (Scott Caan) gets a flashback of a different sort with the the return of his ex-wife, Rachel Edwards, played by Claire van der Boom, as well as their daughter, Grace (Teilor Grubbs). But for the first time, we also meet Rachel’s current husband, Stan Edwards, played by Mark Deklin (from “Lone Star” and “Hot in Cleveland”).
Mark’s shady business dealings put Rachel and Grace in danger, and he comes to Danny for help.
Familiar Faces
High on Danny’s list of suspects is one Bruce Hoffman, played by Barry Levy. Levy has appeared in over 50 television shows and movies, with roles ranging from killer to hero, and tonight, he was cast more as the former.
In a release issued last week, Levy said of his scene: “Scott [Caan] gave me a big unscripted ‘surprise’ at the end of the confrontation that just about floored me, so don’t miss it!”
“LOST” fans might also recognize the actor playing a character named “Jones,” Sebastian Siegel, who was last seen playing ill-fated island redshirt “Erik the Other.”
Members of another passionate fandom will probably recognize Michaela McManus. Though she’s had roles in “One Tree Hill” and “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit,” she’s perhaps best known to younger viewers as the sexy, mysterious werewolf Jules in “The Vampire Diaries.” Chances are she won’t do much biting when she teams up with Kono (Grace Park) as assistant district attorney Karleen Roberts.
Also appearing tonight are Dennis Chun as Sgt. Duke Lukela, Kevin Yamada as a bailiff,
and local martial arts instructor Wallace Salazar, Jr., playing an HPD officer.
Finally, there’s also an attorney played by someone named Michael Green. Could it be that Michael Green?
In Other News
- Speaking of “LOST” flashbacks, “Hawaii Five-0” is also dealing with rumors that the production will be moved to the Mainland. Such talk is nothing new to Daniel Dae Kim, who again says the rumors are false… as far as he knows. Of course, selling his stake in “The Counter” and putting his house on the market probably didn’t help calm the waters. Can “Hawaii Five-0” be “Hawaii Five-0” outside Hawaii?
- Tonight’s episode is titled “E Mālama,” which CBS helpfully translates as “to protect.” But next week’s episode has a title that’s considerably less familiar, even to those with a modest Hawaiian vocabulary: “Powa Maka Moana,” or “pirate.”
- Looking further ahead, CBS has announced that musician and actor Sean “Puffy” Combs will guest star in an upcoming episode of “Five-0.” He’ll be playing NYPD Detective Reggie Williams, a man taking justice into his own hands, in a role requiring weapons instruction and training with a Navy S.E.A.L. Of course, his music will also play a prominent part of the soundtrack.
