Eat the Street Japan
A record-breaking scene, last night’s Eat the Street Japan, with a record number of people lining up for grinds from a record 32 food trucks and street food vendors. Theme of the night: Helping Japan heal, and more than $7,200 was raised for the American Red Cross. Here’s a look at the food, the people, the scene.
Eat the Street Japan
What: Eat the Street Japan, the biggest food truck and street food rally this town has ever seen
When: Last night, Thursday, March 31
Why: Pump it up for Japan
This was the third ETS, with nine more trucks and food booths than last month, and it broke records. Organizer Poni Askew of StreetGrindz.com estimates up to 3,500 peeps showed up in Kakaako on a Thursday night, lured by the promise of trucks rolling in from all over the island, brand-new menu items pushing the Japan theme, and the chance to help a stricken nation heal.
Three weeks after the triple disaster that brought Japan to its knees, people still gave. Dropped into jars for the American Red Cross’ Japan relief, donated by the trucks and street food vendors from gross sales, Japan-designated dishes and tip jars, and from the organizers: $7,226.61.
That alone made this rally unforgettable. But that wasn’t the only difference.
