Editor’s Page: The Challenge of Pulling Together an All-Local Food Gift Guide in HONOLULU Magazine’s Holiday Issue

Now it’s our gift to you.

I’m not sure when it happened: maybe when I hopelessly searched for a candymaker’s house on Roundtop Drive (I got the address wrong); or raced to avoid rush hour traffic with frozen shrimp from Kualoa Ranch and a few other items I couldn’t resist, sandwiched between blocks of blue ice in a cooler; or on my fourth trip to a farmers market in about a week, this time to pick up holiday flavors a local cheesemaker whipped up for us in October. At some point, I realized that creating a wish list of tasty products from local businesses almost three months before Christmas can be logistically complicated.

When we asked the HONOLULU and Frolic teams for their pick of  ‘ono items for our food gift guide, we were thrilled to see a mix of longtime favorites and new items appear on the list. But it meant instead of a one- or two-stop shopping trip, gathering everything involved phone calls, direct messaging on Instagram, asking friends of friends for favors, shipping packages from every island, and A LOT of travel time. Still, there is something about knowing that when you call, open a chat online, or email, you will end up communicating directly with the owner. To help us all out, we have what you need to know about more than 70 gifts from Hawai‘i businesses in our Style and ‘Ono sections. Remember to order early and watch for more of our favorite things at honolulumagazine.com and honolulufamily.com throughout December.

The winter swell means surf competitions on our shores, and scheduled to be in the lineup will be the nation’s first Olympic gold medalist for surfing, Carissa Moore. She’s been going nonstop since she stood atop the podium in Tokyo, but she took time to talk with our own Don Wallace about her journey. She’s thoughtful, inspiring and very real. We are proud to have her on our cover to close the year and we’re looking forward to what is ahead for her, and all of us, in 2022.
