Attention, downtown: Tsukenjo’s just opened on Bishop Street

The Kakaako icon is selling loaded plate lunches for $9

Attention, downtown: We found your best plate lunch deal. Tsukenjo, formerly on Cooke Street in Kakaako, just opened its new location on Bishop Street Tuesday.  

A fixture of the Kakaako scene since 1959, Tsukenjo is known for its Hawaiian food and loaded plate lunches with your choice of tossed or mac salad. Mini plates are $7.50, regular plates $9 and combos are $10. The roast pork has long been the best-seller, at least in Kakaako. Here are the first day’s specials.

The roast pork is tender and succulent — not crispy Chinese style — and smothered in flavorful brown gravy. There are even larger pork chunks underneath. 

A word to the wise: Get the regular portion for $9. It’s a better deal and you can always save the leftovers for dinner.  

Talk about getting the most bang for your buck. No wonder Tsukenjo sold out of this before closing time on Tuesday.

The oven-baked chicken will take you back to elementary school cafeteria lunch days, in the best way possible. There’s something nostalgic and comforting about the tender chicken — which is gigantic, by the way. 

This could easily be a meal for two; I swear the plate weighs two pounds. It’s a comforting, old-school local curry, with lots of tender beef and generous chunks of potato and carrots in a thick, rich curry sauce that blends well with the rice and mac salad.

Starting Wednesday, Tsukenjo will open for breakfast with items like roast pork hash and eggs ($6), Spam mocos ($7.50), a local special of two eggs, two pieces each of luncheon meat, Spam and Vienna sausage, and rice ($6).
