Foods I’ll miss…

Editor’s note: I met Lindsey Txakeeyang at a high school journalism conference organized by the University of Hawaii. I spoke about digital journalism, and later, Lindsey introduced herself and I gave her my card. In early June, she emailed and told me she had graduated from Moanalua High and was heading to Stanford University in the fall. She asked if she could intern with Nonstop Honolulu over the summer. “I am willing to do anything for any experience I can get, whether it be writing or taking pictures or even just doing office work,” she said in her email. I took her in, and assigned her to cover Eat the Street, a new farmer’s market in Kaka’ako, the Korean Festival, all of which she did well. For her last gallery, I asked her to get photos and write captions of 10 foods that she’ll miss. Many of us remember that time, when we moved away from the islands for college or another reason, leaving behind familiar foods that we love. I wanted to capture that at a ripe moment, right before departure. So here’s Lindsey’s lineup. She’s already at Stanford (she left Sunday), and I want to sincerely thank her for her work and wish her well, although she’s already volunteered to intern during school breaks. There’s something about this girl — her motivation, eagerness to work, maturity — that I know will lead her to success, whatever career she chooses. — Diane Seo
Heading to California

Special to Nonstop
In September, I’ll be leaving the island for my freshman year at Stanford University in Palo Alto, Calif. While it’s definitely closer to home than a lot of other places on the Mainland, there are some things I know I won’t be able to find while I’m there — and by that, I mean mostly food. So with that in mind, here are the foods I’ll be dreaming of until I come back home.
