What’s coming: Fall TV
I honestly didn’t realize how much TV I watched until I wrote this post. I thought it’d be fun to preview the upcoming fall TV season, and as I listed the shows I normally watch on a weekly basis, I was shocked how long the list became. In analyzing the list, I realized that 1) I need to get out more and 2) I am mostly drawn by competitive reality shows (“Survivor,” “The Amazing Race,” “America’s Got Talent” and “The Apprentice”) and sitcoms. There were just two hour-long dramas on my list (“Elementary,” “Hawaii Five-0”) and that’s probably due to my short attention….SQUIRREL!
And thank goodness I haven’t fallen for those hip new shows on basic and pay cable channels, otherwise my viewing slate would probably also include hits such as “Breaking Bad,” “The Walking Dead,” “Game of Thrones” and “Weeds.” So far, cable has been mostly a place to turn to for reruns of my favorite sitcoms such as “Friends” and “Seinfeld,” which already adds on more TV viewing hours. I even started to watch reruns of “The Golden Girls” with my last girlfriend. Yes, “The Golden Girls.” And I liked it.
But even with all the returning shows I watch regularly, there are few new shows that I’m keen on watching as well. It will certainly be a challenge to balance all of these shows especially with my (somewhat) busy lifestyle. All I can say is thank goodness for the invention of the DVR. Sorry advertisers, but I’ve got the act of fast forwarding through commercials down to a science. I know exactly how long to fast forward recorded TV programming at the “x 3” speed to land precisely at the beginning of the first scene after a commercial break. If I’m going to watch this much TV I absolutely have to maximize my viewing efficiency, even if it means I have to replace my remote control every few months due to a worn out DVR fast forward button.

“The Amazing Race”
CBS 7 p.m.
Sundays are meant for NFL football in the day and playing volleyball at night. But I still can’t resist squeezing in an hour for “The Amazing Race.” Part adrenaline rush, part world tourism ad, this show stays fresh even in its 23rd season with difficult challenges, exotic locales and bickering teams. There’s a reason why this show has won 13 Emmy awards.
Season premiere on Sept. 29.
