6 Ways to Celebrate the Long Weekend

Lei Chic's guide to the weekend's best events.

Shop

A Head Tart

What: If you don't already know that local swimwear is our weakness, then you really haven't been paying attention. When we got news that Letarte Swimwear was opening a location in Royal Hawaiian Center, we started packing our beach bags. The Maui-based label carries fun, flirty sundresses and cover-ups, maillots in punchy patterns and flattering bikinis that wrap, support and show off all the right parts of your body. You'll find everything from essentials to statement pieces just in time for bikini season—aka summer—to really get geared up.

Where: Level 1, Royal Hawaiian Center

Details: Call 921-2045 for more information.

Five-Star Dining

What: Knowing your horoscope nowadays is as important as knowing your blood type. And, thanks to Mother Internet, there are endless options to help you figure out what decisions you should be making in the realms of love, work and money … but what about the ever-important issue of snack time? Thank goodness for "snack-o-scopes" from Astral Projection Radio Hour, which give you the answers to your burning question for July, such as "What snack should I, as a Taurus, indulge in?" and "What music pairs best with said snack?"

Where: flavorpill.com

Details: We never say no to a pitcher of lemonade (see: Taurus), but we are getting a little jealous of Sagittarius' Slurpee.

Watch

Curve Ball

What: We know what you're thinking: You love the Kate Mosses, Gigi Hadids, Cara Delevignes and Joan Smalls of the world, but is it too much to ask for a model now and then that isn't a size two or smaller? You're not the only one asking. Check out the trailer for the upcoming documentary about plus-size models, Straight/Curve, in which fashion insiders talk about the industry's current beauty standards and how the plus-size modeling world is taking it all by storm. Suffice it to say, we can't wait to watch the full piece next year.

Where: glamour.com

When: Release date is set for September of next year.

Details: Check out the Facebook page for Straight/Curve to stay up to date on the buzz.

Shop

Market Garden

What: You've been dragged to many a flea market with Mom and Granny, picking through old vases and past-their-prime jeans … but this ain't your momma's flea market. Pulled together by the former buyer and staff of super-trendy boutique Aloha Rag, this NMN Market at CLIPS Hawaiʻi will feature lightly used clothes, accessories, shoes and more in great condition from top-tier designer brands. Think Acne, Lanvin, Marc Jacobs, Zara and Raf Simons, as well as some vintage goods. A not-to-miss for sure.

When: Sunday, July 5, 11 a.m.–5 p.m.

Where: 822 Kāheka St.

Details: Refreshments provided. Credit cards accepted.

Attend

Summer Love

What: Bon dance season (*squeal*)! While there's a whole slew of events to hit up in each neighborhood over the next few months, we are extra excited for the huge Mōʻiliʻili Summer Fest. We'll definitely check out the event's bon dance—the biggest in Honolulu—and sample as many of the oh-so-ʻono local treats as possible, not to mention the fun trinkets and cultural creations to shop at all the booths. Come early to see DJ Jojo Flow do his thing, and stay late for the taiko performance by Pacific Buddhist Academy. There's even a keiki corner coordinated by the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawaiʻi, with crafts such as origami folding and hachimaki stamping.

When: Friday, July 3, 5 p.m.–10:30 p.m. Bon dance at 6:30 p.m.

Where: Old Varsity Theatre parking lot, 1100 University Ave.

Details: Visit moiliilisummerfest.com for more information.

Attend

Crystal Magic

What: Everyone needs a breather now and then. Give yourself some mental and spiritual space at Noelani Studios' crystal bowl healing workshop this weekend. The melodic crystal bowls emit sound vibrations that are said to have healing properties and are used in the practice of meditation to create harmony in the mind, body and spirit. Sounds like just what you need, right? Even better, this workshop is totally free. Bye bye, stress.

When: Sunday, July 5, 5–6 p.m.

Where: Noelani Studios, 66-437 Kamehameha Highway, Haleʻiwa

Details: Call 389-3709 for more information.
