February Food News Update: 9 New Restaurant Openings and 6 Closings on O‘ahu

Plus one ramen pop-up with vegan ramen offerings.

Opened:

Yung Yee Kee Dim Sum opened at the end of February on Kapi‘olani Boulevard, in the space formerly occupied by Thank Q Pocha.

Mother Bake Shop, a vegan bakery offering sourdough breads and not-your-typical Danishes (think ‘ulu and kale), opened in early February in Kailua.

La Ciccia, billed as “Italian fusion and breakfast bar,” opened in late January in the former Koa Café on King Street with a menu that includes chicken Marsala, chicken Parmesan and shrimp scampi.

Egghead Café, beloved for brunch, reopened in Honolulu in January, this time in Kalihi. (It was previously in Kaka‘ako and also has a location in Kailua.)

Sakura Tappenyak Sushi, serving—you guessed it—sushi and griddle-in-front-of-you favorites, opened in January in Ka Makana Ali‘i in Kapolei.

Noods Ramen Bar started popping up in Osoyami Bar & Grill in December. From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays, you’ll find bowls including tan tan ramen and black garlic ramen—and any of them can be made vegan.

La Casita, a Salvadoran spot (as far as we know, the only one on the island), opened at the end of last year in Waipahu, serving pupusas and Salvadoran tamales.

Mangiamo by 604 opened at the end of last year at the Navy Marine Golf Course by Pearl Harbor (it’s open to civilians), serving panini, pizzas, pasta, prime rib and burgers.

Cloud Nine Café started touting its Japanese-style soufflé pancakes and boba tea in December, and to a lesser extent, its Taiwanese street food of dumplings and cold sesame noodles.

Stewbum & Stonewall Brewing Co. opened in December, though its kitchen and brewery aren’t open yet. In the meantime, local brews are on tap and you can BYOF.

Moved:

Friend Café (by the same owners of King Restaurant) has moved from Kapi‘olani to Liliha and renamed itself Top Tea.

Closed:

Kobe Japanese Steak House, in business for 45 years, closes on Feb. 29. 

 

Mai Tai Bar and Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. at Ala Moana Center closed on Feb. 23, making way for an Olive Garden.

Topped, a fast-casual Korean spot, closed its downtown location around Valentine’s Day, but you can still visit its Waikīkī outpost on Kūhiō.

 

Hooters and Gordon Biersch at Aloha Tower Marketplace closed early February.
