Birthday dinners, midnight munchies, catch-up lunches with Grandma: Zippy’s Restaurants has been there for it all and more. It’s a place of comfort, familiarity and nostalgia that I’ve known practically my entire life. And it’s not just me. The local chain has been a gathering place for locals for more than 50 years, and within that time it’s expanded to 24 locations across the Islands. But it brings more to the table than Island-style comfort food. It’s a commitment to looking out for our community—from supporting local farms to fundraising for nonprofits across the Islands—that has earned Zippy’s a special place in the hearts (and stomachs) of Hawai‘i denizens.
Now, as Hawai‘i faces its first pandemic in a century, the Island chain is focused on keeping its customers and staff safe and healthy. “In March, Zippy’s closed all dine-in seating and moved to a limited menu for takeout to prevent congregation in our locations as well as expedite service quicker to get our customers on their way,” says Paul Yokota, president of FCH Enterprises Inc., the parent company of Zippy’s Restaurants. “Furthermore, we are encouraging our customers to utilize our online or mobile app ordering platforms so they can get their food faster.” The restaurant also just launched a no-contact pickup service option for online and mobile orders, which allows customers to remain in their car while their order is brought out to them. Staff are encouraged to wear masks, and reminders to practice social distancing are posted throughout all locations. “We are also working on a program to take care of those frontline heroes that take care of us, and you’ll see it very soon,” says Yokota.
For a limited time, customers can purchase bulk orders of chili, hamburger curry and more at discounted prices.
Zippy’s Restaurants is also giving a hand to families. For a limited time, customers can purchase some of its most popular items in bulk for a discounted price. Bulk items (chili, beef stew, hamburger curry, to name a few) range from 4 to 9 pounds, are fully cooked and can be reheated immediately or frozen for later. For one- and two-person living situations, discounted 10-ounce chili, Portuguese bean soup and hamburger curry pouches are also available, and worth stocking up on for those lazy dinner nights. All can be ordered online or through the Zippy’s mobile app.
