Who’s coming: The Best of Eat the Street

First, the giant news: Eat the Street is doubling in size at a permanent new home. Friday’s edition will be at the old Fisherman’s Wharf site on Ala Moana Boulevard, with about 70 food trucks and stalls selling all kinds of made-to-order and packaged food right on Honolulu’s waterfront. Before we sink our teeth into the bacon, chocolate, garlic and spicy bites that’ll be dished up, let’s take a quick look at Eat the Street’s new home.
Meet the 2.0 version of Honolulu’s street food scene. This is Makers & Tasters Kewalo, a food park with ambitions. Every day for weeks now, five food truck and stalls at a time have been serving up lunch and dinner here; that number will triple to 15 at a time. On the last Friday of every month, Eat the Street takes over. And when it’s completed this fall, the food park will feature multiple seating areas, bathrooms, a bar deck, stage and parking for 80 vehicles.
Initially, Poni Askew of StreetGrindz says, the plan was to have semi-permanent MakerStations so vendors wouldn’t have to set up and break down every time. But because of permitting requirements, they switched to purchasing and refurbishing used food trucks. This way entry-level vendors get experience working in a food truck and the mindset of owning their own set of wheels one day. It’s all part of Askew’s vision to turn Makers & Tasters into a business incubator with a food truck school and other boosts for budding entrepreneurs.
It’s a huge leap and they need all the support they can get. You can pitch in this Thursday at an exclusive preview to raise the remaining $75,000 they need to buy and refurbish a food truck for vendor use at Makers & Tasters Kewalo. For Eat the Street this Friday, the wharf balloons to accommodate a whopping 70 vendors. That sounds about right, because Eat the Street’s three most popular themes of bacon, garlic and spicy come together in one giant celebration — it’s Honolulu’s largest street food rally yet!
