Twittering about Traffic
Gas. Bike. Traffic. Plane. Bus. Freeway.
The upcoming 50th anniversary of statehood gets a high-concept Twitter treatment at hi2059.org. The site grabs Hawai‘i tweets with transportation-related keywords and throws them into a continuous stream. Refresh the page a few times and you’ll get a not-quite-random peek into the zeitgeist of Honolulu roadways.

The site is the brainchild of Chris Kalima from the Airspace Workshop design studio. It’s an outgrowth of the recent 2059 art installation at the Honolulu Academy of Arts, which reflected on Hawai‘i’s next 50 years. (2009 + 50 = 2059)
In a mission statement, Kalima writes, “While we enjoy reminiscing about Liberty House and Kam Drive-In, we realize that fifty years into statehood, Hawaii finds itself facing some critical issues. Issues that will require us to look forward, not backward."
He says he’s still in the process of developing the site, but one thing seems clear already: traffic sucks.
HI2059.org is just one of Kalima’s online projects; check out www.radnotsad.com for daily doses of awesomeness.
