Lokahi, which means unity and harmony in Hawaiian, was started in 2017 by Emily Neal, who moved to Maui from Australia in search of good waves and the Hawai‘i lifestyle. Neal now lives with her husband and two small children on the north shore of Maui, where she hand-draws Lokahi’s designs and styles. Lokahi aims to be as sustainable as possible with 100% compostable packaging and no mass-produced products. Working with family-owned manufacturers in Bali, Lokahi ensures its suits are ethically made and that they’re produced in small quantities to maintain their exclusiveness and uniqueness. Each year, Lokahi creates a limited collection with new styles and prints. So, now’s your chance to snag this year’s ‘Ohana Hana Collection’s most popular Pua print, inspired by a vintage aloha print, before it sells out. Be on the lookout for the 2022 collection that will launch in November and feature fabric made of recycled Nylon.

Tai Swim Co.

For those cheeky Island girls who love bikinis with bold colors but don’t want to sacrifice quality fabric, Tai Swim Co. is the answer. Perfect for tanning or making a statement, Tai Swim Co.’s minimalist designs are for girls who aren’t afraid to show some skin and want the ultimate option for achieving that hot summer girl look. The adjustable Tai top’s ribbed fabric contours to your figure, and comes in colors called Bali, which is similar to emerald, and Matcha, a new hue that just dropped on July 15. Similarly, the Tai string-tied bottom gives you full control over how you would like to wear it, either high- or low-waisted. If you are looking for a top with a little more support, the Lindsay top’s thick straps offer a deep plunge V-neck and adorably ties into a bow in the back. The Lindsay top and bottom comes in hibiscus, which is close to a blush color, and Hanalei, a light blue printed with grapefruit-colored hibiscus.

Owner and designer Tai Truglio was raised on Hawai‘i Island and her fondest memories are in a swimsuit, enjoying the water, so it only made sense to go into the bikini business herself. After graduating from ‘Iolani School and then Parsons the New School for Design in New York City, she started her brand, which aims to create timeless pieces inspired by the beauty of the Hawaiian Islands that are both flattering and functional for everyday use. She also uses plant-based dyes to color the nontoxic and recycled fabric. As a conservationist and minimalist herself, Truglio continues to work to make her company as sustainable as possible, from using luxe and ribbed fabric made of 85% nylon and 15% spandex to compostable shipping bags. Tai Swim Co. produces very small batches, using family-owned manufacturers in Canggu, Indonesia, and Foshan, China, in addition to using extra swim fabric to make scrunchies.

Maoi Swimwear

Maoi Swimwear ticks all the boxes: comfortable, sustainable and cute. Its muted colors add an additional level of chic to the flattering cuts that are both supportive and stylish, and best of all made of sustainable fabric. Maoi’s Italian fabric is made from 100% regenerated nylon, which not only reduces the plastic waste in our oceans but requires less energy and crude oil to manufacture compared to new nylon. The Deusa top, which is a bestseller for women with larger cup sizes, offers the support of a bra with an underwire and thick strap, and adjustable straps in the back, while maintaining itselegant shape. The Rio set is also a top seller with the cheekiest bottoms and go-to triangle bikini top, available in lava black, fern, guava and navy blue.

Owners Mahina Florence and Julia Muniz’s love for the ocean and desire to create empowering swimwear was the beginning of their brand, and they are now working to include sustainable practices on all levels of production. The company’s Bali-based production factory ensures zero water pollution and donates leftover fabric scraps to Bali Street Mums, a local charity that provides shelter, clothing, education, basic health care and food to impoverished women and children of Denpasar, Bali. Maoi also uses 100% recycled plastic and biodegradable panty liners and shipping bags.
