The framed faces on the walls of ‘Ono Hawaiian Foods marked the thousands of people who welcomed kanak attacks after eating at the cozy restaurant. Not much changed during ‘Ono’s 57 years in business: The staff rose at 5 a.m., six days a week, to prepare lau lau, chicken long rice and kālua pig. The eatery remained firmly planted on Kapahulu Avenue: “Mama wanted it that way,” said Cynthia Oh Young, co-owner. “It’s the real old-fashioned stuff.” However, now it’s time for retirement and relaxation, so the local landmark closed its doors Aug. 26.
