The Hitt List: My Halloween Picks

Halloween will not fall on a Friday or Saturday again until 2014, so you had better take advantage of all the parties going on this weekend.  Below are my picks for this spooktacular weekend. 

Wild Chinatown block parties only happen every few months, so I wouldn’t dare miss the downtown Hallowballoo block party and neither should you.  Beginning at 5 p.m., there will be five outdoor stages with live bands, DJs and thousands of costumed partygoers. This year, buy one $10 wristband at the street festival and gain access to seven different clubs until 2 a.m., including Soho, Loft, Mercury, Bar 35, Indigo, Next Door and Manifest. 

If no-cover is your thing, J.J. Dolan’s, The Dragon Upstairs, Hanks, O’Toole’s and Murphy’s have plenty to offer.  Street Festival is Free, 1041 Nuuanu Ave, www.hallowbaloo.com  Parking at Marks Garage, 29 Chaplain Lane; Chinatown Gateway Plaza, 1042 Bethel St.; Smith-Beretania Municipal Lot.

If you’re heading into Waikiki, club hopping and walking won’t be necessary if you plan on attending the 6th Annual Halloween at the Hyatt.  It takes place poolside at the Hyatt Regency Waikiki hotel and will have multiple dance floors, a $1,000 best costume contest, giveaways for a trip to Las Vegas and jewelry from Pacific Diamond.  Buy tickets online for $15.  9 p.m. to 2 a.m. 21+

If you really can’t figure out what to be for Halloween, throw on some tattered clothes, red and white makeup and join Kumu Kahua Theatre for its Art of the Living Dead fundraiser.  Calling itself a “mixed media performance,” it will feature a short film contest, theatre performances and the largest zombie walk Hawaii has ever seen.  8 p.m., 21+,  $20 cover includes one drink. 46 Merchant St. For more information, visit www.kumukahua.org.
