The 8 Best Things to Do in September 2015

Since we know you’ve already got your tickets for the Hale ‘Aina Awards on Sept. 27, here are eight more ways to get out this month.

MUSIC

Tim Rose

2015

Local musician Tim Rose’s first full-length studio album, largely funded by Kickstarter supporters, hit iTunes this summer, with a CD release last month. With 11 original songs (and one cover of Buffalo Springfield’s “For What It’s Worth”) recorded at Steelgrass Studios on Kaua‘i, the album shows off Rose’s songwriting and crooner voice, the perfect soundtrack for a long drive or chill night in. Check out the video for the first single, “Be Myself,” online, with guest appearances by local designer Ari Southiphong and others.

An Evening with Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness

September 4

Relax, we’re not venturing into the forest for a sing-along around a campfire (though we’d be down for that). This concert will be more like a blast from the past, where our younger selves will revel in the resurgence of Andrew McMahon, whom we loved as the frontman of Something Corporate and Jack’s Mannequin in the early 2000s. Fingers crossed he’ll play some of the oldies.

It began as a “Cultural Jubilee” at the Ala Moana Hotel in 1971, organized by Hui O Laulima and co-sponsored by the Hawai‘i United Okinawa Association. In 1982, the jubilee morphed into the Okinawan Festival, held at McCoy Pavilion. It moved again in 1985 to Thomas Square before settling into Kapi‘olani Park in 1990, where it continues to bring in tens of thousands of andagi lovers each year. Expect an appearance by Gov. David Ige. Uchinanchu pride!

Most exhibitions are curated based on existing artwork. Not this one. Museum staff chose seven artists and one artist collective last September to create art specifically for Artists of Hawai‘i, a biennial showcase of local artists and their work. See Maile Yawata’s ceramic characters, Lauren Trangmar’s witty expressions, Alison Beste’s ambiguous photos and more.
