Sushi Yuzu grand opening at Ko Olina

Some of you may be familiar with Yuzu, the Japanese izakaya in the depths of the Ala Moana Hotel that serves up fresh, handmade items. They now have a second location at Ko Olina Resort, across Monkeypod Kitchen, and we got to check out their grand opening party this past weekend.

It might seem a little strange for such an authentic Japanese restaurant to be in Kapolei, but as we looked around, it made sense: There’s a large resort community and high-end hotels within walking distance, and real estate in the second city is booming. There are chains and a few good quality, mid- to high-end restaurants, but there is nothing like Yuzu out there. Aside from the fresh sushi and unique menu items, Sushi Yuzu uses organic, natural ingredients and incorporates local ingredients where possible. Their organic tamari shoyu is wheat-free and they use vegan ingredients in most house-made sauces, including dressings. Those of you who already know owner/chef Motoko “Moco” Kubota from her Hale Macrobiotic restaurant, also know that she’s a macrobiotic expert, so the food is definitely a step in a different direction for the west side.

Sushi Yuzu’s new location is above ground, so it’s brighter and airier. There’s some free parking, but they offer free valet service for patrons, as well. At the moment, they’re open for happy hour and dinner, daily.
