For 35 years, architect and longtime Kaimukī resident Hitoshi Hida poured his love for his favorite neighborhood into the pages of a 5-by-7-inch notebook, capturing its small-town charm through intricate pen-and-ink drawings. Sixty-three of those illustrations can now be found in Sketches of Kaimukī, his hardcover book that celebrates the community’s quaint businesses, bungalow-style homes, unique architecture and unassuming vibe. A flip through the pages offers a nostalgic look back at some of Kaimukī’s most iconic haunts, from Harry’s Music Store and the Kaimukī AA Taxi stand to Tanoue’s Saimin and Queen Theater.
