Shopping: The Lovin’ Spoonful

Like a time machine in a cone, ice cream transports you back to your youth. Here’s the scoop on where to indulge.

If you love waffle cones, visit the Marble Slab Creamery for new cone flavors such as vanilla-cinnamon or chocolate-and-Butterfinger dipped. Try the Raspberry Cheesecake (cheesecake ice cream with raspberries and graham crackers; at right) or an Almond Joy (double-dark chocolate ice cream with almonds and coconut). Ala Moana Center (by Makai Market), 949-9449.

Made with egg yolks, milk, honey and whipped cream, the homemade honey ice cream ($2.42) from Mediterranean Café is simple and luscious. At first, you don’t taste much, then, a heavenly bloom of flavor fills your mouth. 212 Merchant St. No. 6, 533-1677.

If Girl Scout cookie season can’t come soon enough, get your fix at Häagen-Dazs, with a Mint Chip Dazzler ($7.03; at left). You’ll dive through three scoops of mint-chip ice cream, with hot fudge sauce, Oreo cookie crumbs and whipped cream. Ala Moana Center, 941-5161, or www.haagendazs.com for locations.

Bubbie’s specializes in dirty-sounding sundaes, such as the Come Here Little Girl or the More Than a Mouthful. Going with the flow, we sampled the Poke and Stroke ($5.95), which has four different ice cream flavors, whipped cream, sprinkles and hot fudge sauce. It’s served in a little boat with spoon oars, gummy bears riding triumphantly atop. 1010 University Ave., 949-8984, or Koko Marina Shopping Center, 396-8722.

Sure, you can try the sweet potato ice cream, but we found another elusive flavor, a genuine rum raisin, at Dave’s Hawaiian Ice Cream. It’s made with real liquor rather than food flavorings and features large, plump raisins ($2.85 for a small cone). For locations, visit www.daveshawaiianicecream.com.

A fresh alternative to grocery-store brands, Cold Stone Creamery (above) offers hand-packed, to-go containers. Sizes include Mine (a pint, $5.99), Ours (quart, $8.99) and Everybody’s (48 ounces, $11.99). Don’t miss the Banana Caramel Crunch. Ward Entertainment Center, 591-2331. Once a national chain with 130 restaurants, and a local favorite, Farrell’s Ice Cream Parlour is back from the dead with two locations in California, and a third slated to open in Windward Mall in July. The woman behind Hawai‘i’s branch, Maki Kuroda, explains, “The first time I came to the United States from Japan, I went into a Farrell’s. I was 16 and I was like, wow! I was never able to forget that. Now I’m a mother of a 6-year-old girl. I’ve been researching who owns Farrell’s and the licensing rights since she was about 2.” Kuroda plans to add new ice cream flavors, such as lychee and green tea, but otherwise the basic concept is close to the original. Her plan? “People have to leave happy!”
