Shift 2: Chinese New Year Festival – Choy Cheng

While Friday the 13 may have had some hiding their heads under blankets lest they cross paths with a black cat, break a mirror, walk under a ladder, or the like, the Chinatown community was out in full force continuing the celebration of the upcoming Chinese New Year.

With streets closed down, police officers stationed at intersections, and the crowd growing thicker by the minute, local Chinatown businesses began hanging strings of firecrackers in preparation for Choy Cheng — the traditional Chinese lion dance blessing.

I was lucky enough to arrive half an hour before I was scheduled to shoot at the Hawaii Theatre for the opening night of the Shanghai Circus, so I followed the sounds of the drums and the crowd just in time to catch some of the action.
