See Zak Noyle’s Gorgeous Photos of the Quiksilver In Memory of Eddie Aikau Surf Competition

A new Zak Noyle Photo Exhibit in Waikīkī shows off his pics from the recent surf competition.

The 2016 Quiksilver In Memory of Eddie Aikau surf contest in February was a momentous event, with more than 20 top surfers braving 40-plus-foot waves to memorialize the late, great Hawaiian waterman.

Documenting this huge sports event took just as much nerve as actually surfing it, and photographer Zak Noyle was right in the thick of things, capturing beautiful shots even as he ducked the monster waves over the course of eight hours, equipped only with his fins and his camera.

Now you can check out his shots from the day at a special photo exhibit in T Galleria by DFS in Waikīkī. It’s open through August and features pics of surfers Clyde Aikau, John John Florence, Koa Rothman, Mark Healey, Makuakai Rothman, Danilo Couto, Kala Alexander and Mason Ho.

You can also learn more about Eddie Aikau himself and check out some of the specialized equipment used by Noyle and the surfers during the competition, including his camera, the Aqua Lung inflatable ocean safety vest that kept surfers from drowning, and the surfboard used in the competition by big-wave surfer and participant Koa Rothman.

If you’re interesting in meeting Noyle and a few of the featured pro surfers, there’s going to be an official unveiling of The Eddie by Zak Noyle gallery on Saturday, May 7 from 7 to 9 p.m., with a chance to have artwork personally signed, plus a pop-up shop feature a selection of Noyle’s artwork, T-shirts and ocean gear. Gallery proceeds will be donated to The Eddie Aikau Foundation.
