Preview: Kahala Wine & Food Classic

The Kahala Resort kicks off its annual Fall Wine & Food Classic tonight, a weekend of wine, food and cigars. Although the highlights are the gourmet dinners tonight and tomorrow, people can sign up for a cooking demo, a wineology seminar or a cigar experience.

This weekend’s big event features the cuisine of Carolynn Spence, the executive chef at Los Angeles’ Chateau Marmont; many celebrities and high-brow clientele flock to her restaurant to have what she calls “good, modest, simple food with just the right amount of attitude.”

Attendees this weekend will also get to sample wines from Napa’s Frank Family Vineyards. Owner Rich Frank is best known as a Hollywood producer who has launched several successful shows such as “The Golden Girls,” “Mork and Mindy” and “Cheers,” as well as movies like “Pretty Woman,” “Father of the Bride” and “Good Morning Vietnam.”

With such glamorous headliners, the Kahala is going with a Hollywood theme: tonight’s dinner will be black and white, and tomorrow’s dinner will be in the pale pink and lavender hues of Chateau Marmont’s famous bar.

There are still a few seats available for the dinners and classes; if you would like to reserve a spot, call 808-739-8760 or email wineandfoodclassic@kahalaresort.com. (I would call to be safe.)

We got a preview of the food and wine yesterday at Hoku’s, with some commentary by Spence and Frank:

Media got a preview of this weekend’s Kahala Wine & Food Classic last night. If you’re into wine, food, and/or cigars, this is the team that’s going to light up the weekend on the beach.

I also got a minute to talk story with Spence. She was totally open and approachable, but hoped out loud that I wouldn’t ask her what her specialty was, because her standard answer in the past has been, “banging the waiters.” Alrighty, then! We steered clear of that question. (Sorry about the volume.)

See you at the Kahala Wine & Food Classic!
