Preview: Firefighters foundation food fest

There are still a few tickets left for tonight’s big fundraiser for the Honolulu Firefighters Foundation (HFF). I can’t go — Nonstop’s Tracy Chan will be covering it — but I got to hang out with some hunky firemen yesterday to watch them prep for the event. There will be food booths from 14 restaurants and organizations showcasing some great food, as usual, plus wine and soft drinks. This year, there will be a cook-off between four teams of firemen, as they serve some of their best recipes (there’s no money or trophy involved, just bragging rights).

Here’s a look at the shrimp salad sandwich the Waikiki fire station will be serving tonight, with a recipe in case you want to try it on your own. If you want to see how they make it, click here.

We dropped in on the Waikiki firehouse #7 yesterday to watch them prep for the big event, happening tonight. Their featured recipe is shrimp salad sandwiches, which they’ll be serving on taro rolls. Does this guy look familiar to you? Check the logo on his shirt.

The food fest, held at the Kakaako fire station on Queen Street from 5:30 to 9 p.m. tonight, is $150 per person and you can buy tickets at the door. Proceeds from the event will benefit the HFF and its mission to promote, educate and support public safety. This year, the HFF is looking forward to developing a partnership with the Straub Clinic and Hospital Burn Unit, which is the Pacific Region’s only multi-disciplinary burn treatment center delivering quality burn care to the community.
