Party pics: Trip Around the Islands
The ARTS at Marks Garage hosted an art reception Friday for thirteen local artists, most of them young but well-known members of the Chinatown art scene, who collaborated on a series of images that took viewers around the island, visiting each region with an art piece.
The creation process of the pieces is itself a fascinating story; inspired by Juliette May Fraser’s 1952 print series “Ke Anuenue” and local political, social and environmental issues, each piece is its own subtle form of activism. Every picture incorporates a lithograph done by lead artist Sonny Ganaden, and aside from that, the art styles vary wildly, from watercolor to pen and ink drawing to paint to colored pencil and textured layers.
At the end of the art show, the artists, which included Sonny Ganaden, AJ Feducia, Joseph Pa’ahana, Dana Paresa, Jasper Wong of Pow Wow and the others took everyone who came to the reception on a journey through the creative process of each piece and the emotional connection they have with the place pictured.
