Party pics: Sunset Room VIP Grand Opening
The aptly named Sunset Room, on the second floor of Aloha Tower above Gordon Biersch, kicked off its grand opening weekend on Friday with a traditional Hawaiian blessing, lion dance and a sharply dressed crowd of Honolulu’s industry elite. The new management team is headed up by The Artist Movement director Andreas Counnas, Asylum’s Willis Haltom and Darren Zane, along with creative director Tammy Shaffer (who has worked with Go Ventures’ DJ Reza), makeup artist and model Angel Deihl on door, model Mayo Christi hosting bottle service and a crew of other people you’ll probably recognize from the nightlife scene around Honolulu. They’ve banded together to create a new club and do what they do best, which is bring in world-class talent and amazing music with a great sound system and visuals.
Following the VIP party, the club opened its doors to the public, with West Coast house music veteran DJ Donald Glaude spinning. Opening weekend continues tomorrow night with NYC’s Paul Mahoney of dance-punk group LCD Soundsystem, playing on Saturday.
For some of the organizing forces, the Sunset Room is more of a mainstream venture, designed as a lounge to to cater to an upscale crowd, and also as a dance venue to host the best influences in house, electronica, hip-hop and more from around the world. Just a teaser: Keep an eye out for names like Pillowtalk, Taryn Manning, Adam12, Willie Graff & Tato, Tim Jennings and Shannyn Sossamon, all scheduled to make appearances at the new spot. Currently, The Sunset Room is open for business Thursday-Saturday from 9 p.m.-2 a.m. and Sunday from 5 p.m.-midnight.
