Party pics: In Memory of Eddie Aikau kickoff

The 29th annual Quiksilver In Memory of Eddie Aikau — the original one-day big wave invitational surfing event that requires waves measuring in excess of 20 feet — had a kickoff party at Quiksilver’s Waikiki store last night. The “who’s who” of Hawaii’s surf community came to celebrate the event, pray for surf, and pay tribute to the legendary big wave surf rider for whom the event is named.

The weather and wave conditions must be perfect, or the invitational doesn’t happen. So although it’s the 29th annual event, the Quiksilver In Memory of Eddie Aikau has only been held a total of eight times, most recently on December 8, 2009. The holding period for this event begins on December 1, 2013, and concludes on February 28, 2014. The official opening ceremony is today at Waimea Bay at 3 p.m. with the Aikau family in attendance.
