Party pics: DJ Masterkey @ Zanzabar
Japan’s hip-hop legend DJ Masterkey was at Zanzabar Nightclub Saturday night, spinning tunes for an eclectic crowd of both locals and visitors. The dance floor was packed to capacity for his entire run, as the amped up crowd danced to energetic mixes of mostly Top 40 tunes, including hits from Beyonce, Lady Gaga and Far East Movement. DJ Masterkey is also the founder of a popular urban clothing line called Rocksmith Tokyo, and he proudly wore one of his shirts (available only in Japan) as he worked.
I asked DJ Masterkey after his show why he chose mainly Top 40 tunes, and he said it’s because that’s what most Hawaii people like to hear and that he’ll often adjust his mixes to cater to each audience’s preference. He’s personally a passionate fan of old-school ’80s and ’90s hip-hop and will often integrate those sounds into his mixes, as well as house, disco and reggae.
