The Underneath

The cryptic disappearance of a man brings his brother home to Hawai‘i to find out what may have happened to him. Shady characters shrouded in mystery abound in this world premiere by Susan Soon He Stanton, a Hawai‘i-born playwright who got her BFA from New York University and her MFA from Yale.

Through the Darkness: The Nightscapes of Saitō Kiyoshi and Kawase Hasui
Opens November 21 and runs through January 18, 2015
Paintings of the night can be creepy (Friedrich’s Abbey Among Oak Trees) or serene (van Gogh’s The Starry Night), but, above all, the darkness is mesmerizing. This new exhibition of Japanese prints from 20th-century artists Kiyoshi and Hasui (whose Starlit Night, Miyajima is pictured here) showcases two dichotomous methods of portraying an endlessly fascinating theme.

Comedian Iglesias returns to Honolulu for the third year in a row, this time on his Unity Through Laughter world tour. He used to wear aloha shirts because they were all that would fit him, but the slimmed-down Fluffy still rocks the local apparel, hits up Germaine’s Lū‘au and munches on malassadas every chance he gets. We love that. Like your comedy a little edgier? Daniel Tosh takes it to the extreme around the corner in the Blaisdell Concert Hall both nights, too.

Holiday Craft Fair
November 29
Hawaiian Mission Houses and Kawaiaha‘o Church team up again this year to present one of the oldest craft fairs on O‘ahu, selling 100-percent locally made gifts from more than 50 vendors at each site. Stop by for everything from baby products to glass artwork, plus lunch.
