Nonstop Movies: HIFF Preview

For film fans like myself, the Regal Dole Cannery Stadium 18 Theaters transforms into Shangri-La every year in October. For a week and a half every fall, the Hawaii International Film Festival gives Hawaii film buffs the opportunity to experience cinema from around the world. All film genres including action, romance, drama, comedy, documentaries and the extreme are available to ensure there is something for everyone. The hardest part is figuring out how to make time to see all the great films.

After perusing this year’s selection, I’ve finally set my viewing schedule and the following 7 films are a must-see for me. For a complete list of films and showtimes, visit the HIFF website.

“Barfi!” (India)

This looks like a really charming and sweet film about a mute Indian boy who seems to have a lot to offer. I love it when a film effectively mixes comedy and charm.

“Cloud Atlas” (USA)

Produced by Andy and Lana Wachowski (formerly the Wachowski brothers), the team behind “The Matrix,” this film promises to be visually stunning despite its reputed complicated storyline.

“Dangerous Liaisons” (China, South Korea)

An Eastern take on the classic French novel by Pierre Choderlos de Laclos. This version of the tale of seduction and deceit stars three of Asia’s most beautiful stars — Cecilia Cheung, Jang Dong Gun and Zhang Ziyi. I can’t wait.

“Ek Tha Tiger” (India)

Bond meets Bollywood? The trailer promises classic spy action with that unique Indian touch.

“Silver Linings Playbook” (USA)

Director David O. Russell (“The Fighter”) returns with a family drama that is already receiving tons of Oscar buzz.

“Tai Chi 0” (China)

I’m always a sucker for a great martial arts film. Plus, you need to watch this trailer. Best narration ever.

“The Thieves” (South Korea)

This film just recently broke the ticket sales record in Korea to become the country’s #1 film of all time. Much like its American counterpart, Korea’s version of “Ocean’s 11” features many of Korea’s A-list movie stars.Throw in an elaborate heist and Hong Kong film legend Simon Yam and I am so there.
