Night Lights: Weekend Wrapup Oct. 22-25
With all the worrying about planning for Halloween next week, I kind of panicked on Friday when I realized that I was going to Crazy, Sexy, GHOUL and had no idea what sort of costume I was going to wear. I mean, this annual party, thrown by the folks from The Slopes of Diamond Head Hui, is kind of a big deal. It’s like THE place to show off your Halloween costume before Halloween. Fortunately, my line of work gives me leeway to dress in theme… or not… so I made do with a blue wig and went back to worrying about a costume on Sunday, after the rest of the weekend was over. (I finally went with the relatively simple plan of being a black cat.)
It’s always a trip, though, seeing the crazy stuff that people come up with a week before Halloween. I’ve covered this party for three years now, and every year, it’s sooo much fun. Take a look at the gallery by myself and Marc Edward, and get some costume ideas for yourselves:
Around midnight, I tore myself away from the wonderful madness at The Waterfront and popped in to check out OO-Spot’s annual Mushroom Music Festival with Mark Farina. Totally different scene, and much less crowded than I expected.
If there’s one thing you should know about Mark Farina, it’s Mushroom Jazz, his trademark style of relaxing, trippy house music, also the name of a series of albums that the master DJ has been putting out since 1996. Definitely not the pounding-bass-bouncy-hardcore-house that hardsteppers and the younger raver kids are used to, which created a kind of division amongst the mixed crowd at Pipeline. Still, most people looked like they were having fun:
Saturday, all the vampires came out to play at The Venue for DJ Nocturna’s first-ever Miss Vamp gothic beauty pageant. Having been involved with the event since the planning stages, it was almost a surprise to me that the house was packed, with most of the local media establishments, including at least one TVstation, representing. The event, especially the fashion show, was really interesting. I was very impressed by some of the gorgeous, fantastically unique styles some of the girls in the pageant had designed to wear on the catwalk.

Congratulations to Kornelia Szauter, the new (blue) Miss Vamp Hawaii!
Whew, all right. The weekend’s finally over. Who’s excited about Halloween? See you at Hallowbaloo? Rocky Horror at the Waikiki Shell? Halloween at the Hyatt?
Party hard, and party safe!
