Night Lights: Weekend Wrapup Oct. 1-3

First off, in industry news…

So there’s a lot of buzz being generated about The Edition, the new hotel opening up in Waikiki next to the Ilikai. What most of you probably haven’t heard, though, is that they’ve got a super-swanky new nightclub inside called Crazybox that you can check out during their soft opening Thursday-Saturday from 9:30 p.m.-3 a.m. The name might be silly, but you’ll be impressed, trust me. Parking also isn’t a problem; there’s ample spaces for $1 an hour behind the hotel, by the marina. Their grand opening party (and the hotel’s official grand opening) is slated for the 15th, so get ready, and check back on Nonstop for more details and coverage. Can’t wait!

You can read more about the new hotel here, on USA Today.

On to the weekend!

Although First Friday was slower in the earlier part of the evening (probably because of the Daughtry concert and various other things going on, plus the threat of rain), Hotel Street after 10 p.m. was as mad as usual. Take a look at my gallery from Shop, Bop & Grind in Chaplain Lane, Fashionista’s Market (psst, their anniversary is next week… seems like just yesterday I was interviewing those girls about opening up a new boutique on Bethel Street), and the new and super-cool Gypsy Night Market in the Chinatown Courtyard:

Running into local boy/celeb designer Andy South at BambuTwo, hanging with other local designer Matt Bruening (@mattbruening) was pretty cool… that’s him on the right.

Also, I’ve got to give a shoutout to former Advertiser TGIF employees Kawehi Haug and Nick Gervais, cupcake makers extraordinaire, and the founders of brand-new biz called Let Them Eat Cupcakes. So proud of you guys!

Here’s more shots from later in the night by our intrepid photographer, Ryan Matsumoto, who’s braved First Friday’s packed nightclubs and art galleries for two months in a row now:

Saturday, Ka seemed like the place to be, as it usually is when the promoters are throwing theme parties. An amazing majority actually dressed in theme (black and white? That’s easy!), and the place was so packed by midnight that I kept having to go outside to breathe. That’s around the time comedian Jo Koy rolled up with his entourage (NOT in theme, I must add) and commenced to party like the cool guy that he is.

You’ve got to forgive me; I’ve never actually seen one of Jo Koy’s shows. But everyone I talk to says he’s hilarious, and after Googling some of his shows (funny side note, the second-most suggestion on the Google search is “Jo Koy wife”…. oooh la, ladies, tell me if he’s still married!), I gotta say he’s pretty good.

Sunday was a gorgeous day, obviously intended for pool parties. So what was I to do? Hang out with half the Chinatown indie kids at Margot Seeto (@meatoseeto) and Mike Pooley’s (@michaelback) poolside birthday party, of course.

What’d you guys do?

P.S.
I’ll be off-island next weekend, and, if I’m lucky, possibly blogging about the Dalai Lama and San Francisco nightlife, but the regularly scheduled Weekend Wrapup will resume the week after. Thanks for reading!
